And if some people might now I have a big love for antique’s and old items from Indonesia, Tibet and Asia in general. The house is almost getting to small for all the masks, Wayang and woodcarvings I collected so far but last week my eye fell on this old wooden toy bus and I had to take it home. Love it.!

BATIK STAMPS

Wahyu_Tumurun

Ade’s last piece is based on the Batik pattern, called Wahyu Tumurun from Yogjakarta. Wahyu Tumurun literally means ‘Divine blessing’ or ‘Revelation’. This motive is a symbol for humans wish for God’s blessing and enlightenment. Mostly people wear this batik if they’re hoping for a job promotion or recognition by their peers and superiors or simply to attain a better and prosperous life.

One of the tools they use to make a batik pattern on the traditional clothing of Indonesia like the one shown above are batik stamps. I’ve always been highly fascinated by those stamps. Batik stamps, or mostly called ‘cap‘, was invented around 1845 and mostly made of copper. Sometimes you will find batik stamps made of wood. The stamps are used to make the process of making batik easier.

They are used by dipping them into hot wax (Bee-wax) mixed with paraffin and applied to the cloth in a design. Then the cloth is dipped into a dye. All of the areas of the cloth that are covered with the wax do not absorb the dye and remain in their original color. When the cloth is dry, more wax is applied and then the cloth is dyed again, usually in a more darker color. This process will be continued until the desired design is completed. After that the wax is removed completely by ‘melting’ the cloth.

The stamps itself are great works of art. The’re made with total precision and eye for detail. I like to collect those stamps myself and I spend many hours wandering around on flea-markets to find these beautiful objects!

Shannon Larratt 1973-2013

This morning we got the incredible sad news that Shannon Larratt, the biggest icon of the body modification world has passed away.

Shannon Larrett, was a programmer, writer, and artist that you probably know best because of BME, the body modification website he ran from 1994 until mid-2008, where he later came back to about a year or two ago. He also maintained a body modification blog called MODBLOG. Beyond that Shannon Larratt was somebody that brought people and a community together. His contributions to the world of body modification can be felt everywhere, especially in the people that looked up to him, and people he was closest to. He made a real difference and helped others be themselves, and stood up for human rights. If you would like to learn more about Shannon check out his pages Shannon’s Blog: http://www.zentastic.com/blog/about-shannon/ Shannon’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/larratt?fref=ts Also check out Bme’s page in dedication to him: http://news.bme.com/2013/03/15/rip-shannon-larratt-1973-2013/

Thank you for all your inspiration and work! You will be truly missed.

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!

Blog_369

2012.

After year full of ups and downs we’re almost at the end of 2012. I can say, it was quite a hectic but mostly really fun year! In the beginning of this year, Ade got a request to design a pair of shoes for one of our favorite shoe/clothing brands, called Vans. It was a really nice project to work on. The fun thing about this project was that the client gave the total freedom to create a design which was a combination between something modern like a sneaker with a design based on an ancient ornament found in traditional Batik fabrics. The shoes turned out great and we got allot of good responses. Thank you for that!

Besides the project for Vans, Ade also got a request from one of the oldest Indonesian restaurants in Paris, France. They saw his work on the blog and asked him to design a working outfit for their co-workers in the restaurant. A totally new experience! In August we actually had the opportunity to visit the restaurant to see his printed design in real life. One of the other things we did was joining a couple of tattoo conventions in The Netherlands just like last year. But this year we choose to join, Breda, Alkmaar, Rotterdam and Eindhoven. Great to see so many familiar faces as well meeting new people. I must say that tattoo conventions are always a great opportunity to show your work to people and explain them a little bit more about the meanings behind the designs.

2012 was also the year that Lielo decided to start a collaboration with her friend and fellow photographer, Joel. After doing a couple of photo-shoots together they decided to finally make it official and named their project ‘2XWORKS‘. You will definitely see more work of them being posted on the blog in the new year!

2012 was our first year fulltime in The Netherlands, which means that’s it’s almost time to visit Indonesia again! But first we will take a small break from work from Sunday 23 December until Thursday 3 January. You can still send us an email on thisis369@gmail.com to make an appointment with Ade Itameda to get tattooed, to discuss a design or with any other questions. We will respond to all your emails when we return.

Overal 2012 was great. So let’s go to the new year! We wish you all a creative 2013!

Sampai jumpa,

Thisis369

BATU KARAS

We decided to go on a mini-vacation to escape from the chaotic Jakarta. We drove 10 hours in the car to Batu Karas, Panangdaran, West Java. It’s an absolutely beautiful place, not yet discovered by allot of tourists. We stayed in a nice, amazing hotel and we drove with a small motorboat through the jungle. Just what we needed.

But back to work! The t-shirts and new stickers are getting printed now and believe me they’re awesome! Soon we will upload the photo’s!

JAKARTA

Beautiful Jakarta.

This photo is made from the appartment on the 20th floor around 05:30 in the morning. We woke up and saw this stunning sun rise. Within half an hour the city will be filled with cars, motorcycles. The sky is filled with polution. Every day millions of people come to this city to work.

This is one of the rare moments that you see Jakarta in his most beautiful way.
