Of course being very thankful for the great time and colleague’s he had when he worked in Rotterdam!

Take a look at their new, updated website for more info here-> http://www.sevenseasatelier.com/

Ade realizes that some people are still waiting for a reply on their emails, but due to hectic times making all the arrangements and due the amount of emails he recently received, he’s still busy catching up. So thanks in advance for your patience!

When Ade is opening up his new schedule with bookings for in the shop in Eindhoven he will announce this on his Facebook or contact you by email.

First he will take a well deserved, small break in his homeland before he will start working in the new shop starting from February 2017.

So more news about this in the new year!

In the meanwhile, requests for bookings in Eindhoven can still be send to:  thisis369@gmail.com please include all relevant information.

APPOINTMENTS
Emails in English please! I am originally from Indonesia, so you can write me also in Bahasa Indonesia but i will reply in English to make it easier.

Make sure you gave me enough details concerning your project:

  • telephone number
  • explain your idea (any specific ornaments / symbols that you want to incorporate?, please send along any reference images you have, that you think will clarify your idea. I want to draw something by your guidelines, but I will advise you on what I think will work well or possible other options for your tattoo that will make the design better).
  • possible placement(s)
  • size (hand / palm size or cm)
  • reference images (examples of my work you like in style / details)
  • a clear, recent photo of the body part to be tattooed
  • in case of a cover up / continuing an old piece – a clear, recent photo of the tattoo(s) you already have
  • If you have specific dates in mind please send me those and I will do my best to fulfil requests.

Those that have all that info in their initial email generally get booked first. If you haven’t added this info, do it now and add it as a reply to the email you originally sent. I’m easily confused, so a continuing thread is much easier.

Due to the amount of messages I get a day, I’m not able to respond right now.

It usually takes me 1 (up to 4) weeks to respond to emails due to the volume of emails I receive.

Please do not send multiple emails (I don’t take any requests by Instagram / Facebook)

If it’s regarding when and where I’ll be guesting in the near future, please visit my instagram : adeitameda, all my recent work, dates, and in case of a cancellation, it will be uploaded there.

A small overview; This year, Ade joined 3 conventions (Rotterdam, Frankfurt, Paris), he got published in some amazing books (for the last publication of his work, check below), we traveled to Antwerp, Berlin &  Milan and off course Ade was very happy to work on all the great and sometimes challenging designs he made for you guys this year! Big thanks to you all!

Soon we will take a well deserved break from work / vacation to relax and to spend some time with our family’s, to recharge and hunt for new idea’s. But in the new year we will return, rested and full of new inspiration!

BATIK PATTERN MEANINGS – THE PRODIGY NEW MUSIC VIDEO

Kawung

In my work you will often find some returning patterns and shapes on the background. Because I always get inspired by the patterns you can find on the traditional clothing & fabrics from Indonesia and also because they match very well with the other ornaments or images I use, I love to use them in my work.

Those patterns on the fabrics are made by a special dyeing technique called Batik. What many people might not know is that those patterns are not just random patterns, but that they have a much deeper meaning behind them. And that some patterns can only be found in specific areas of Indonesia. Many Indonesian batik patterns are symbolic. For example infants that are carried in batik slings decorated with symbols designed to bring the child luck, and certain batik designs are reserved for brides and bridegrooms, as well as their families. Some designs are reserved for royalties, and even banned to be worn by common people. Even a person’s rank can be determined by the pattern of the batik he or she wears.

Some of the traditional batiks show patterns mixed with images from for example butterflies, birds and other animals. In the end of 16th century, the majority of the Islands in the region of Java had adopted Islamic faith. This change strongly influenced Javanese textile designs as Islam forbids the depiction of humans and animals. This prohibition brought about a variety of stylized and modified ornaments as symbols, such as flowers and geometric patterns, known as Ceplok. The Ceplok patterns were the way in which batik makers attempted to get around the prohibition, creating simple elements which represented animals and people in a non-realistic form.

BATIK KAWUNG

Kawung_2

For example this Batik Kawung, that I used as an inspiration for the tattoo I made shown above. Batik Kawung is one of the oldest batik motifs and is worn by the king and the family. Known in Java since the 13th century, and appears on Hindu temple walls such as the Prambanan. The Kawung pattern symbolizes justice and power.

Batik Kawung pattern has a meaning; symbolizing the hope for human beings that they will always remember their origins. This pattern consists of four circle focused on a point means a King that is assisted by his servants. Actually ‘Kawung’ or ‘Kolang kaling’ is also a name of Palm fruit (Areca Palm blossom) that Indonesian people love to eat.

Part of the Ceplok (circle) family of designs, the Kawung can be arranged as intersecting circles in some of its variations, making dynamic repeated patterns.

PARANG RUSAK

Parang_3

Another example is Batik Parang Rusak. Parang means weapon, literally defective big knife (like a sword). It symbolizes power and strength. Batik with a Parang Rusak pattern is originally worn exclusively by knights and people of authority, this particular batik motif must be processed with serenity and patience. If a mistake is made during the process, it is believed that its magical power will disappear. It’s a traditional batik pattern from a special district of Yogyakarta. The curved lines of a Parang motif portray waves, symbolizing the center of nature’s powers and referring to the king and his powers. There are even more variations of Parang Rusak patterns, such as Parang Rusak Barong, Parang Kusuma, Parang Klitik, Parang Klitik Mentik, etc.

And if some people might now I have a big love for antique’s and old items from Indonesia, Tibet and Asia in general. The house is almost getting to small for all the masks, Wayang and woodcarvings I collected so far but last week my eye fell on this old wooden toy bus and I had to take it home. Love it.!

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!

Blog_369

2012.

After year full of ups and downs we’re almost at the end of 2012. I can say, it was quite a hectic but mostly really fun year! In the beginning of this year, Ade got a request to design a pair of shoes for one of our favorite shoe/clothing brands, called Vans. It was a really nice project to work on. The fun thing about this project was that the client gave the total freedom to create a design which was a combination between something modern like a sneaker with a design based on an ancient ornament found in traditional Batik fabrics. The shoes turned out great and we got allot of good responses. Thank you for that!

Besides the project for Vans, Ade also got a request from one of the oldest Indonesian restaurants in Paris, France. They saw his work on the blog and asked him to design a working outfit for their co-workers in the restaurant. A totally new experience! In August we actually had the opportunity to visit the restaurant to see his printed design in real life. One of the other things we did was joining a couple of tattoo conventions in The Netherlands just like last year. But this year we choose to join, Breda, Alkmaar, Rotterdam and Eindhoven. Great to see so many familiar faces as well meeting new people. I must say that tattoo conventions are always a great opportunity to show your work to people and explain them a little bit more about the meanings behind the designs.

2012 was also the year that Lielo decided to start a collaboration with her friend and fellow photographer, Joel. After doing a couple of photo-shoots together they decided to finally make it official and named their project ‘2XWORKS‘. You will definitely see more work of them being posted on the blog in the new year!

2012 was our first year fulltime in The Netherlands, which means that’s it’s almost time to visit Indonesia again! But first we will take a small break from work from Sunday 23 December until Thursday 3 January. You can still send us an email on thisis369@gmail.com to make an appointment with Ade Itameda to get tattooed, to discuss a design or with any other questions. We will respond to all your emails when we return.

Overal 2012 was great. So let’s go to the new year! We wish you all a creative 2013!

Sampai jumpa,

Thisis369
