FLAMMEND HERZ – TATTOO DOCUMENTARY

Flammend_Herz_2

Last week a friend came up to us with a documentary made in 2004 named ‘Flammend Herz’ and told us that it was a total must see if you’re interested in some true ‘tattoo history’. And nothing was lied, every tattoo-artist, tattoo-collector and even people who have no particular interest in tattooing should see this documentary!

This German-Swiss documentary tells the story of three of the earliest pioneers in the tattoo-world of Europe. The story of Albert Cornelisse (Rotterdam, 1913), Herbert Hofmann (Freienwalde, 1919) and Karlmann Richter (Kiel, 1913) who shared a great friendship build on their passion of the art of tattooing. In that generation, tattoo’s where mainly worn by sailors, soldiers or abroad criminal circuits. But in the 70’s and later people start getting more and more interested in tattoo’s and getting tattooed. Something still rarely socially accepted, especially at work. This documentary shows a portrait of these three man, who on the first eye look like ordinary elderly man, but underneath their clothes, they are covered in tattoo’s from head till toe. Herbert Hofmann’s tattoo shop in Hamburg St. Pauli was “Germany’s first professional tattoo shop”, is the place where the lives of these men crossed. They all helped Herbert professionally for substantial periods in their lives, but when he decided to pass over the shop to his younger cousin in 1981 the others felt betrayed and their friendship came to an end.

But was this really the end of an intense friendship?

An overall very touching, beautifully filmed documentary which gives you a good insight into the tattoo-world back then and the differences/similarity’s with the tattoo-scene now days. It’s almost hard to believe this documentary is not that known. From the beginning till the end we watched this documentary with a smile on our face, definitely a must see!

GORILLA + FOO DOG

Gorilla ornament for Tim.

Observe this regal creature in its natural habitat. Gorillas are vastly sociable, and have intricate methods of communication with each other. Furthermore, there is a great deal of  honor involved with their interactions with each other.

Gorillas are intimately aware of each member within the community. In fact, the responsibility to assist both young and elderly members of the troop (term for a group of gorillas) are shared among all the members of the community. This is a message to us to not pass over our debt to our elders – but be active participants in their final days.

Foo dog for Chino, Female version will be added later on other arm.

Foo dog (chinese guardian lion)

They are believed to have powerful mythic protective powers that has traditionally stood in front of Chinese Imperial palaces, Imperial tombs, government offices, temples, and the homes of government officials and the wealthy from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220). Pairs of guardian lions are still common decorative and symbolic elements at the entrances to restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and other structures, with one sitting on each side of the entrance, in China and in other places around the world where the Chinese people have immigrated and settled, especially in local Chinatowns.

SAM + JOEL

Sam wanted to make a tattoo influenced by the place where he has his roots. His family comes from Manado, Sulawesi. Where the owl is an important symbol. Ade turned it into a more modern version.

Joël, wanted to get tattooed for more then 12 years, but could not find the suitable design. We met him a couple of weeks ago and it directly clicked. And day by day Ade started to design an unique design for him, based on him as a person.

Because Joël is a light-painter, you can see his work here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/joelkiel1982/, and a creative mind, he told us:

My creativity starts in my mind, after that it flows through my heart, through my arms, into my hands‘.

A little explanation about the piece:

The upper part is the Sri Yantra, which excists out of 9 triangles which are all created out of the center point, the Bindu. It’s an symbol of man and woman, and also for: Shiva (the male) and Shakti (Female). For JoĂ«l it symbolizes the connection between new ideas and ideals. For creation and creativity.

The text is Om Mani Padme Hum, a mantra. For JoĂ«l it means being proud, passional and a new start. The mantra is mirrored on the other side to show the two sides of life, black and white, life and death etc. You can also see the Wheel of Dharma which is a symbol that has represented Dharma, the Buddah’s teaching of the path to enlightenment.

For a first tattoo, this design was kinda heavy. But Joël seperated the man from the boys and handled the pain very well ;) This piece will be continued later to be a full sleeve.
